Divsional Controller - OZZ Solar

OCE's gas & power division provides competitively priced natural gas and electricity to commercial, industrial and institutional customers. OCE's solar division, OZZ Solar, is a vertically integrated, full-service solar development company that specializes in rooftop solar installations, partnering with commercial/industrial landlords across Ontario.


Since its formation in 2009 in response to Ontario’s Feed-In Tariff (“FIT”) Program, OZZ Solar has experienced rapid growth and today has over 100 MW of awarded FIT Contracts. OZZ Solar’s team has the regulatory expertise and technical experience to design, install, operate and maintain rooftop solar projects. OZZ Solar partners with landlords to develop these projects and sell the electricity generated by the solar facilities under the FIT Program.


Position Summary:

Reporting to the Corporate Controller, the Divisional Controller – Solar, will oversee all the divisional financial aspects.

  • Implementation and maintenance of financial controls and procedures.
  • Lead the conversion of the current accounting systems to a new ERP.
  • Develop, maintain and/or improve financial and accounting models and processes.
  • Prepare detailed financial forecasts and analysis on a monthly basis and more frequently if required.
  • Together with the operating management of Solar, develop the annual budget and forecast.
  • Assist in planning for growth, including identification and implementation of appropriate infrastructure.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff and coordinate cross-function training for staff as required.
  • Manage the daily functions of general accounting, accounts receivables, accounts payables, and job costing.
  • Establish and periodically update procedures and models for an efficient monthly-end financial close.
  • Administer financial system and make enhancements/upgrades as needed.
  • Assist in the audit and tax management process.
  • Ensure best practices are in place and implement improvements to key operating activities and processes.
  • Complete the monthly consolidation of the division’s financial statements and prepare the quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements.
  • Prepare accurate, reliable financial information, schedules and analysis for the division and its legal entities, including monthly and year end working papers.
  • Oversee monthly meetings for job cost budgeting and actual project performance.
  • Monitor actual performance against budget, identify reasons for trends/variances and propose recommendations to mitigate negative performance and trends.
  • Prepare the division’s information for federal, provincial and state income tax returns and ensure compliance with all federal, provincial and state commodity taxes.
  • Prepare information as required by regulatory agencies and act as a liaison for statutory audits/reviews.
  • Initiate, prepare and provide ad-hoc reporting/analysis and research to assist management in decision making.
  • Any other duties as required to meet Company objectives.

Skill Requirements

  • University degree with a professional accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA).
  • Minimum 5-10 years of operational accounting experience, with increasing responsibility, obtained in industry.
  • Have good business acumen and operating as a partner in the decision making process.
  • Experience working with the Divisional President/Business Unit Head in driving the operations and growing the business.
  • Forging relationships with department heads and operational managers.
  • The ability to work independently, problem solve, work under pressure and obtain results quickly while juggling many competing priorities/strategic and tactical.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in a high growth entrepreneurial environment is an asset.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter with the ability to meet required timeframes.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Ability to quickly understand business process and be an advocate for change.
  • Must be a team player and consensus builder, with an excellent customer service orientation.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and IFRS
